TGS Motorcycles = Tobias Guckel Special Motorcycles

Tobias has specialised on Newbuild-Custombikes, but any form of repairs, as well as regular after-sales service work is undertaken at TGS Motorcycles. |
My first bike was a “Zündapp KS 80” that I bought myself when I was only 12 years old. It cost 25 Euro and I modified it adding a new fender and changing the guise with metalwork, removing all the useless parts. I designed a “John Player Special” painting scheme in black and gold and swapped the handlebars for one from a motocross bike. I used to be a motocross rider and bought myself a Yamaha Motocross bike in the middle of the 80's. I trained at last two hours a day on my home-made Motocross track, but as time went on became fascinated in Sport Bikes and mostly rode my bikes at high speed. I have owned about ten Suzuki GSXR750's which have all received severe work-overs: Weight-loss, new paint, modified GFK parts, engine and chassis tuning, etc. I consider design to be as equally important as the technology.
In 1995, I had a motorcycle accident on the way to training on the Salzburgring in Austria. The bike was totally destroyed. I had had a lot of accidents before this one, but this was by far the worst. It made me want to quit following a career of becoming a racer and I have since slowed down a bit.
At the end of the 80's, I had served my apprenticeship in a Ford automobile workshop where I learned about metal working, painting and bodywork. I then worked for seven years at a big motorcycle shop with a racing team building race bikes, but also choppers and streetfighters. As well as being a painter, my responsibilities included overhauling and repairing engines and gearboxes. Field experience was gained working on Suzuki, Kawasaki, Ducati, Aprilia, Cagiva and KTMs. In 1998, I decided to open my own workshop repairing and rebuilding racers, choppers and streetfighters and in 2000, I built my first custombike for one of my customers. This was a turning point and I realised that building custombikes was my passion. Old Style has always been my favourite and is likely to remain so. Rigid, wild, fast and loud. To begin, the idea of form and design are purely in my head. Despite drawing the idea onto paper, further ideas come to mind during the build and become integrated into the design as I go along, refining the final bike. Outside my work on custombikes, I am also a fan of historic sports cars. In the past I have tuned cars, but these days tend to concentrate more on the bikes. Only my personal car collection gets a tuning now and then: an NSU TT, a Mini Cooper and a Porsche Carrera 911. |
